If you intend to hold your shares as part of your financial plan, exercising your options when the price is down can be beneficial for both minimizing taxation and starting the holding period for a qualifying disposition when you do decide to sell.
If you can already comfortably afford all of your expenses, you may benefit from holding onto them if you believe your company's stock price will increase. But if you need an extra boost of cash and your options are in the money, exercising them could be the right decision for you and your investing or saving goals.

In many cases it can be advantageous to exercise your stock options early (provided you have the cash, and assuming you believe in the company given you accepted a job there). The first benefit of exercising early is that you will likely have zero (or very little) tax liability at the time of exercise.
You don't need to exercise your options as soon as they vest. There are some legitimate reasons for waiting a bit longer to exercise. For example, you may have a ton of faith that the market price of the company stock will continue to increase over time.
How do you avoid taxes when exercising stock options?
Early exercising (ISOs and NSOs)
Because the strike price of your stock options is usually set to the 409A valuation at the time you're granted the options, early exercising lets you exercise before the 409A valuation goes up. That way you're not making a phantom gain—and you won't owe any taxes.

As a rule of thumb, a non-founder CEO joining an early-stage startup (that has been running less than a year) would receive 7-10% equity. Other C-level execs would receive 1-5% equity that vests over time (usually 4 years).
How much money can you make trading options? It's realistic to make anywhere between 10% – $50% or more per trade. If you have at least $10,000 or more in an account, you could make $250 – $1,000 or more trading them. It's important to manage your risk properly by trading them.
Be Extra Careful With Incentive Stock Options
However, if your company's post-termination exercise period is shorter than 90 days, that is the specified period you have until expiration and forfeiture. After 90 days from termination, ISOs become nonqualified stock options, which have a different tax treatment.
A stock grant provides the recipient with value—the corporate stock. By contrast, stock options only offer employees the opportunity to purchase something of value. They can acquire the corporate stock at a set price, but the employees receiving stock options still have to pay for those stocks if they want them.
As with RSUs, stock grants typically vest after a period of time, or after certain performance measures are met. You're not liable for income tax until your stock grant vests, at which point you must report income equal to the value of the stock you received.

Cashless exercise: Some employers allow you to exercise your options by selling just enough of them to cover the costs of exercising others.
At expiration, though, an option is worthless if it is OTM. Therefore, if an option is OTM, the trader will need to sell it prior to expiration in order to recoup any extrinsic value that is possibly remaining.
Buy to close is used when a trader is net short an option position and wants to exit that open position. Traders normally use a sell-to-open order to establish open short option positions, which the buy-to-close order offsets.
