Do bonds beat inflation?
From the average returns of stocks, bonds, and Treasury bills (i.e. "cash"), over the full time period 1900-2021, have all kept up with inflation. Source: Credit Suisse Global Investment Returns Yearbook, 2022 summary edition. As you see, bonds had a real return--i.e. beat inflation--by 2% per year.
Inflation is a bond's worst enemy. Inflation erodes the purchasing power of a bond's future cash flows. Typically, bonds are fixed-rate investments. If inflation is increasing (or rising prices), the return on a bond is reduced in real terms, meaning adjusted for inflation.
The government can sell bonds to the public as a means to control inflation. By selling bonds, this will enable in reducing the amount of money in circulation within the economy, thus reducing the level of inflation.
The twin factors that mainly affect a bond's price are inflation and changing interest rates. A rise in either interest rates or the inflation rate will tend to cause bond prices to drop. Inflation and interest rates behave similarly to bond yields, moving in the opposite direction from bond prices.

Inflation and interest rates move in the opposite direction from bond prices. If inflation means higher prices, why do bond prices drop? The answer is the relative value of the interest the bond pays. When prices go up, the purchasing power of the interest payments from a bond goes down.

Stocks fare better under a high inflation regime, with the average real return over all years of high inflation being a gain of 2.51 percent.
Short-term bond yields are high currently, but with the Federal Reserve poised to cut interest rates investors may want to consider longer-term bonds or bond funds. High-quality bond investments remain attractive.
The people who purchase a bond receive interest payments during the bond's term (or for as long as they hold the bond) at the bond's stated interest rate. When the bond matures (the term of the bond expires), the company pays back the bondholder the bond's face value.
Are bonds a good investment in 2024?
Vanguard's active fixed income team believes emerging markets (EM) bonds could outperform much of the rest of the fixed income market in 2024 because of the likelihood of declining global interest rates, the current yield premium over U.S. investment-grade bonds, and a longer duration profile than U.S. high yield.
As for fixed income, we expect a strong bounce-back year to play out over the course of 2024. When bond yields are high, the income earned is often enough to offset most price fluctuations. In fact, for the 10-year Treasury to deliver a negative return in 2024, the yield would have to rise to 5.3 percent.
Should I only buy bonds when interest rates are high? There are advantages to purchasing bonds after interest rates have risen. Along with generating a larger income stream, such bonds may be subject to less interest rate risk, as there may be a reduced chance of rates moving significantly higher from current levels.
Some of the worst investments during high inflation are retail, technology, and durable goods because spending in these areas tends to drop.

We expect bond yields to decline in line with falling inflation and slower economic growth, but uncertainty about the Federal Reserve's policy moves will likely be a source of volatility. Nonetheless, we are optimistic that fixed income will deliver positive returns in 2024.

I Bonds are one of the best sources of safe, real yields available today. On the other hand, the purchase limitations on I Bonds are so restrictive that for larger investors, TIPS are the only way to build meaningful inflation protection into their portfolios in a short period of time.
The cons of investing in I-bonds
There's actually a limit on how much you can invest in I-bonds per year. The annual maximum in purchases is $10,000 worth of electronic I-bonds, although in some cases, you may be able to purchase an additional $5,000 worth of paper I-bonds using your tax refund.
Do bonds go up in a recession?
As investors seek safer assets during a recession, the demand for bonds typically increases. This increased demand can drive up the price of existing bonds, especially those with higher interest rates compared to new bonds being issued.
Increasing the amount of money you make each month is another way to cover the rising cost of goods and services. Consider asking your current employer for a raise. The worst thing they can say is no. Or maybe you have a hobby that could be turned into a profitable side hustle.
Money market account
A money market account can be a safe place to park extra cash and earn a higher yield than from a traditional savings account. Money market accounts are like savings accounts, but they often pay more interest and may offer a limited number of checks and debit card transactions per month.
“Bonds can bring stability, in part because their market prices have been more stable than stocks over long time periods,” says Alvarado. “By adding bonds to a portfolio, an investor may be able to reduce the amount of volatility in the portfolio over time.”
Bonds remain a safe, easy way to save and earn money over time. The Treasury guarantees to not only pay you back – but to double your initial investment over 20 years.
