What were the weaknesses of the US in the Vietnam War?
The US were inexperienced and did not know much about guerilla or jungle warfare. Nineteen was the average age of the army, meaning they were inexperienced and most were not even full combat troops but men who were drafted into the armed forces only to serve in Vietnam for one year.
Disadvantages of U.S. Troops
One of the largest disadvantages of American troops in Vietnam was that most people were no older than the average age of 19 with little to no war experience and would commit major war crimes such as raping, murdering, and torturing innocent women and children.
Failure in Vietnam was rooted in a misunderstanding of the type of conflict and a failure to adapt. US commanders continually attempted to make the war fit their understanding of operations, not a true understanding of the conflict itself.
The loss of life of American soldiers, the determination and ferocity of the Vietcong assault, and coverage of the brutal response (including the capture on camera of a suspected Vietcong officer being executed in a Saigong street) led many Americans to conclude that they could not win a war against such a dedicated ...
They also struggled with logistical problems, as well as the complex political situation in Vietnam. On top of that, the Vietnam War was a conflict with few conventional military objectives. There was no war front to advance, no safe region to defend, not even a well-defined theatre in which to operate.
Failures for the USA
The bombing campaign failed because the bombs often fell into empty jungle, missing their targets. The North Vietnamese guerrillas. knew the jungle and made use of elaborate underground bases and tunnels to shelter from US bombs, and often re-used unexploded American bombs against US soldiers.
The American government and public lacked a clear understanding of, or the motivation and adaptability to succeed, in Vietnam. They were also at a disadvantage culturally, politically and militarily, as they were not Vietnamese.
The Vietnam War severely damaged the U.S. economy. Unwilling to raise taxes to pay for the war, President Johnson unleashed a cycle of inflation. The war also weakened U.S. military morale and undermined, for a time, the U.S. commitment to internationalism.
The counter-productive and inappropriate American military strategy in the Vietnam War was, to a great extent, the main reason for their loss of the war, however a combination of factors made the war 'unwinnable', including the strength of the Communist forces in North Vietnam, and problems on the home front which ...
The United States entered Vietnam with the principal purpose of preventing a communist takeover of the region. In that respect, it failed: the two Vietnams were united under a communist banner in July 1976. Neighbouring Laos and Cambodia similarly fell to communists.
Did the United States win or lose the Vietnam War justify your answer?
The U.S. Army reported 58, 177 losses in Vietnam, the South Vietnamese 223, 748. This comes to less than 300,000 losses. The North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong, however, are said to have lost more than a million soldiers and two million civilians. In terms of body count, the U.S. and South Vietnam won a clear victory.
Yes. If the military didn't have its hands tied behind its proverbial back with rules of engagement and a search and destroy(Body count wins) strategy that was ineffective. Had they taken a more MacArthur like attitude to the war the North would've been bombed to dust and the south pacified.
The four main causes of the Vietnam War were: 1) The power struggle between France and Ho Chi Minh, 2) The Domino Theory, 3) Cold War politics, and 4) The Gulf of Tonkin Incident 1964.
By far the greatest development challenge facing Vietnam is climate change. As a country with a long coastline and two low-lying delta regions, Vietnam is often listed among the countries most vulnerable to sea level rise, floods, drought and extreme weather events.
As of 2020, there were approximately 6.3 million veterans of the United States military still alive who served during the period of the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1975. Around 8.75 million service personnel served during the war, with 40% of those stationed in Vietnam and the surrounding Southeast Asian countries.
They carried the soldier's greatest fear, which was the fear of blushing. Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to.” The title of the book is The Things They Carried and here, is listed a few things they carry within themselves.
It killed four million Vietnamese and over 58,000 Americans. Millions more, Vietnamese and Americans, were wounded by shell or shock and the war came close to ripping our country asunder. With the exception of the Civil War, no war wrought such long range damage to the American soul.
The Vietnam War was particularly hard on American soldiers for several reasons. Firstly, the guerrilla warfare tactics used by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army made it difficult for American forces to distinguish between civilians and combatants, leading to high levels of stress and psychological trauma.
The troops were faced with a significant obstacle in the form of the country's thick jungles and swamps, and they were required to adapt to the foreign environment. The climate of Vietnam was also challenging for American soldiers, who had to contend with the suffocating heat and humidity that was prevalent there.
Crucially, the manner in which pacification from the 1966 Honolulu Declaration to the 1968 Tet Offensive was conducted – via the destructive and indiscriminate American “big unit” war and having to work through the corrupt and inept GVN channels – were the main contributors to the GVN failing to win hearts and minds, ...
Why was the Vietnam War so unpopular?
Many Americans opposed the war on moral grounds, appalled by the devastation and violence of the war. Others claimed the conflict was a war against Vietnamese independence, or an intervention in a foreign civil war; others opposed it because they felt it lacked clear objectives and appeared to be unwinnable.
There were many factors that led to the failure of the USA such as Strengths of North Vietnam, weaknesses of South Vietnam, changing public opinion, international isolation of the USA and difficulties faced by the military.
The increased spending for the war during the economic prosperity of the mid-1960s produced pressure on prices. Because economic policymakersfailed to institute corrective policies, inflation accelerated by the late 1960sand laid the basis forthe inflationary spiral of the 1970s.
Because we did in fact lose the war. It was our going-in objective to preserve the Republic of Vietnam (i.e., South Vietnam) as a free, non-communist nation. We failed, and all of Vietnam, North and South, is now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
The US did not lose the individual battles. Due to the rising loss of lives, more than 58,000 casualties, and lack of support from the American public, the Paris Peace Accords were signed in 1973 and all the US and allied troops were withdrawn - so called Peace with honor.
