How does someone make money with bonds?
There are two ways to make money on bonds: through interest payments and selling a bond for more than you paid. With most bonds, you'll get regular interest payments while you hold the bond. Most bonds have a fixed interest rate. Or, a fee you get to lend it.…
There are two ways that investors make money from bonds. The individual investor buys bonds directly, with the aim of holding them until they mature in order to profit from the interest they earn. They may also buy into a bond mutual fund or a bond exchange-traded fund (ETF).
Bonds are a great way to earn income because they tend to be relatively safe investments. But, just like any other investment, they do come with certain risks.
A bond is a loan to a company or government that pays investors a fixed rate of return over a specific timeframe. Bonds are a key ingredient in a balanced portfolio. Long-term government bonds historically earn around 5% in average annual returns, versus the 10% historical average annual return of stocks.
Bonds are an investment product where you agree to lend your money to a government or company at an agreed interest rate for a certain amount of time. In return, the government or company agrees to pay you interest for a certain amount of time in addition to the original face value of the bond.
Most bonds pay interest annually, semiannually or at the end of their term, but some pay interest monthly.

Bond returns have consistently exceeded the returns of cash and cash equivalents. From 2008-2022, bonds outperformed cash by a 2.1% annual average. While 2022 was the worst-performing year in the modern history of the bond market, the year's results failed to offset the outperformance of the preceding 15 years.
- Historically, bonds have provided lower long-term returns than stocks.
- Bond prices fall when interest rates go up. Long-term bonds, especially, suffer from price fluctuations as interest rates rise and fall.
These are considered safer, low-risk investments because they are fully backed by the U.S. government. That means that investors are protected from the impacts that events like war, a recession, or even inflation can have on their bonds.
Do I bonds earn 7% annually?
The current rate for I Bonds is 6.89%. This rate is good for all Series I Bonds issued between November 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023. This rate is a combination of the fixed rate of 0.40% and the semiannual (1/2 year) inflation rate of 3.24% (6.48% annualized).
Treasuries are generally considered"risk-free" since the federal government guarantees them and has never (yet) defaulted. These government bonds are often best for investors seeking a safe haven for their money, particularly during volatile market periods. They offer high liquidity due to an active secondary market.
The bond market is a wide field, with many different categories of assets. In general, you can expect a return of between 4% and 5% if you invest in this market, but it will range based on what you purchase and how long you hold those assets.
The only option for cashing electronic savings bonds is by logging in to your TreasuryDirect account online. If you have paper savings bonds, you can fill out the appropriate form and mail it and the bonds you want to cash to the Treasury Retail Securities Services — the address is listed on FS Form 1522.
How much does it cost to buy a bond? The fees and commissions charged to buy a bond will vary from broker to broker. If you buy a Treasury bond through Treasury Direct, you won't pay any additional fees. Note that most bonds have a par value of $1,000, so the minimum investment required will be about that amount.
For example, a $1,000 bond with a coupon of 7% pays $70 a year. Typically these interest payments will be semiannual, meaning the investor will receive $35 twice a year.
Imagine you wish to amass $3000 monthly from your investments, amounting to $36,000 annually. If you park your funds in a savings account offering a 2% annual interest rate, you'd need to inject roughly $1.8 million into the account.
What causes bond prices to fall? Bond prices move in inverse fashion to interest rates, reflecting an important bond investing consideration known as interest rate risk. If bond yields decline, the value of bonds already on the market move higher. If bond yields rise, existing bonds lose value.
With the appropriate investment strategy, you will be earning a long-term income and not depleting the capital amount. You will need roughly R2. 4 million to invest, assuming a 5% withdrawal (R10 000 per month). This is for the initial withdrawal requirement of R10 000 per month.

Series EE savings bonds are a low-risk way to save money. They earn interest regularly for 30 years (or until you cash them if you do that before 30 years). For EE bonds you buy now, we guarantee that the bond will double in value in 20 years, even if we have to add money at 20 years to make that happen.
Bonds offer a fixed, predictable income from interest. They are also more liquid and may see greater returns than CDs. However, if you're looking for a highly secure and easy way to earn interest, CDs may be more suitable to your goals.
Bottom Line
Moving 401(k) assets into bonds could make sense if you're closer to retirement age or you're generally a more conservative investor overall. However, doing so could potentially cost you growth in your portfolio over time.
Investing in bonds when interest rates have peaked can yield higher returns. However, rising interest rates reward bond investors who reinvest their principal over time. It's hard to time the bond market. If your goal for investing in bonds is to reduce portfolio risk and volatility, it's best not to wait.
