Where does horse racing money go?
Most of the money goes to the owner of the horse, but the jockey receives a percentage of the purse, as well as a riding fee, place fee, and salary if they are retained by one owner. The better the performance of the horse, the more a jockey can earn from a race.
A - The owner receives 75% of the prize money the remaining 25% is split between the trainer 10%, the jockey 10%, stable staff and racing charities 5%.
Purse money
Finishers receive a percentage of the purse, with 60% going to the winner, 20% to the runner-up, 10% to third place, 5% to fourth, 3% to fifth, and 2% to sixth. So, the owner of a winning horse in a race with a $20,000 purse would make $12,000.
One frequently-implemented reform was to include horses finishing fifth in the purse distribution; the method most often employed for doing this was to award 60% of the purse to the winner, 20% to second, 11% to third, 6% to fourth and 3% to fifth, a format still observed by many tracks today.
Typically, the owner of the winning horse receives 80% of the purse, while the trainer and jockey earn 10% apiece.
Industry. Pay for jockeys varies and is based upon the experience and track record of success. In 2015, beginning jockeys earned $28 per race on the low end and as much as $124,000 for the top prize in a premier race. Even in a Triple Crown race, jockeys that don't finish in the top five make as little as $500.

How much do horse owners make for winning the Kentucky Derby?
The purse for the 2023 Kentucky Derby is $3 million, with $1.86 million of that going to the winning horse's owner (and 10%, or $186,000, to the winning jockey). The remaining purse is shared among the second- through fifth-place finishers.
A company called Equibase keeps statistics for racing in North America. On their list of the top 200 North American-based horses by earnings, only 3 horses have ever earned $15 million-plus on the race track. Only 69 have ever earned $5 million-plus. Another 50 or so have earned over $4 million.
Getting nominated for the Triple Crown costs just $600 in the early period in January, but then escalates to $6,000 for late entries up to the end of March, and then $200,000 for a last-minute entry. It then costs an additional $25,000 to actually claim your spot in the Kentucky Derby.

The Solution
The racing industry does not have a retirement plan. This results in thousands of racehorses being sent to knackeries and slaughterhouses where they're killed for dog meat and human consumption.
With jockeys and trainers prohibited from betting on their own horses, can horse owners bet on their horse, given how far removed they are from the race? The answer is yes. That said, they are specifically prohibited from betting against, or laying a bet on, their own horse.
Whippets became popular as racing dogs in England in the 1800s. This earned them the nickname "The Poor Man's Racehorse" because Whippet racing and betting was most popular among the working class. In the 1900s, English textile workers brought the dog to Massachusetts, where their racing days continued.
The most expensive horse, a Thoroughbred – Fusaichi Pegasus, sold at a whopping over $70 million. Another famous one, the retired British champion – Frankel, was once valued at $100 million.
Secretariat. Known to his breeders as "Big Red" and to fans as "the Clark Gable of horses," Secretariat proceeded to smash race records. He still holds the fastest times in all three of the American Triple Crown races.
